BOND
What is a Bond?
All contractors must have a Bond in the amount of $15,000 in the state of California and are required to file it with the CSLB in order to remain licensed. A Contractors License bond is a type of surety bond that would most accurately be described as an advanced loan or a line of credit. It provides protection to the contractor, the company that hired them, and the state bond issuing agency in case of a claim. (i.e. A contractor lands a job and they use that money to finish up an ongoing job that they have. The client that hired them ends up finding another contractor that will do it for less so now the contractor has to refund the client that money. In a case like this where the contractor already used up the money, and he doesn't have the money on hand to pay the client, the client can go after the contractor's bond).
When you acquire a bond you make a promise that you will abide by all the rules, laws, and regulations under state and federal law as a contractor and if a violation is made to said laws the licensing board may file a claim against the bond. When a claim occurs, the surety company investigates the claim and its validity and will provided compensation to the claimant up to the full amount of the bond purchased and the contractor will then have to repay the surety for the coverage it has provided.
